Residents must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care of patients requiring ophthalmic surgery.
- communicate effectively and demonstrate caring and respectful behaviors when interacting with patients and their families
- gather essential and accurate information including informed consent, pre-operative assessment, and post-operative management and rehabilitation for their patients
- make informed decisions about diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the pre-, peri-, intra- and post-operative period based on patient information and preferences, up-to-date scientific evidence, and clinical judgment
- develop and carry out patient management plans
- counsel and educate patients and families regarding the risks and benefits for a surgical procedure including providing appropriate, timely, and complete informed consent that is sensitive to and appropriate for age ethnicity, culture, literacy level, native language, disability, and patient competence
- use information technology to support patient care decisions and patient education
perform competently all medical and invasive procedures considered essential for the area of practice - provide health care services aimed at preventing health problems or maintaining health
work with health care professionals, including those from other disciplines, to provide patient-focused care in the pre-operative care, operating room, and post-operative and recovery care.
