What We're Reading

Protect Your Sight

James Folk, MD and Mark Wilkinson, OD are professors at the University of Iowa.  They are experts in the field of macular degeneration, and they are not being paid by anyone to recommend anything. They treat patients with age-related macular degeneration almost every day, perform research that explores the causes of AMD, attend scientific meetings, participate in treatment trials, and promise to tell you the straight scoop. They will tell you what scientists and doctors all over the world know about this disease, and, just as importantly, what they don’t know. The first three chapters describe AMD along with the latest science which yields clues to what causes it. You need to understand the disease in order to fight it. The last six chapters tell how you can fight back to save your vision. They will talk about changing your lifestyle, eating the right foods, and taking multivitamins with zinc along with other medications which may reduce the risk of vision loss. They will discuss the latest treatments for the wet form of AMD, including new ones that have not yet been approved but show promise. They will also talk about how to maximize your remaining vision and live as full a life as possible. You can fight back to save your sight. Drs. Folk and Wilkinson will tell you how.

From Addiction to Redemption in the City of Angels

Steven George was living the American Dream. To the outside world, he had everything. He had a spacious home in Brentwood, California, a beautiful wife, two adorable children, and a convertible Porsche. His was the perfect life, until one day when his wife discovered his deepest secret. For over a decade he had been struggling with a relentless addiction to drugs and alcohol. Stream of Unconsciousness chronicles Steven's dark experience with his addictions, his wife's attempt to discover the truth, an emotional intervention, and his subsequent life experiences in one of the premier rehab facilities in the nation. This poignant memoir gives the reader an honest, unique insight into the mind of the addict as he first struggles to survive in a world of lies and then learns how to stay sober and ultimately live a full life with no secrets.

Release of The Student Doctor Network Caribbean Medical School Primer

The Student Doctor Network Caribbean Medical School Primer tells a personal account of a doctor’s journey through offshore medical school, gives first hand answers to questions, and provides information that is not freely expressed by websites and catalogs.  Let this book help you make the right decision and be your step by step guide to realizing your dream: becoming a doctor.

“Dr. Yarbrough does a nice job consolidating just about all the information an overwhelmed, first-year medical student would need to know in a well-organized and easy to read handbook.  It could also be worthwhile reading for a parent or spouse of a student in order to give them insight into what their family member is embarking on and investing in for the next four years.”

- Eunice Koh, M2- Ross University School of Medicine

“Dr. Yarbrough’s The Student Doctor Network Caribbean Medical School Primer is an excellent book and will be of great benefit to prospective medical students to Caribbean medical schools. This book does not only prepare students for living in the Caribbean and attending school in a foreign environment, it also highlights facts about the U.S. medical degree and practice in general.”

- Dr. Gina Letang

Learn how to refract!

This interactive guide teaches the basics of refraction for both plus and minus cylinder techniques.  This tutorial includes a refraction and retinoscopy simulator.

"When you watch a good refractionist perform a monocular subjective refraction it looks like a complicated flurry of hand motions and spinning dials. We’re going to try to slow things down a little and show you that refracting isn’t as difficult as it may look. In fact, we can break it down into a simple, step-wise process that will allow you to refract nearly anyone."

Comments

I am currently working as a part-time ophtho tech before starting residency in 2007.

This refraction tutorial program is extremely helpful, very user friendly, and has greatly assisted me in nailing down the concepts behind an accurate refraction. It feels great to see the attending make little or no changes as he "streaks over" my refractions now.

Also, it sure beats reading a book on refraction ;)

Awesome!
