Format: PDF Download Size: 22.7 MB Excerpt from the book: There is a certain serenity in her expression as Fatos talks of her feelings about her blindness. She appears comfortable, and I too am comfortable, warm, and drawn inexplicably closer to this determined and confident young lady. In her Turkish-accented English, she tells me the story of her disability. "I had just graduated from the American Academy for Girls in Istanbul when the terrible headaches began. I had the headaches for the last three years of high school. I thought they were because of pressure, hard work and myopia. I had glasses, but I didn't use them. But now the headaches were worse. I went to the eye doctor. He said it was the myopia, and recommended that I wear my glasses. One night I had the shakes, just a few seconds, all over my body. Again, I had the same experience when I was trying on my prom dress during the evening. I was scared, began to cry, and was afraid I was going to die. My family said it was just the pressure of the exams." If you find this free eBook useful, then please support MedRounds. |
