By Brooke Strickland and Dr. Andrew Cash

Epidural fibrosis is a condition that develops when scar tissue forms around the nerve root.  It is common to see people develop this condition after back surgery.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms can vary, especially depending on the location that the surgery was performed, but usually include back pain that is moderate to severe, including pain along the sciatic nerve.  Symptoms can also include restricted movement in the back, muscle weakness, or even numbness.

How is it treated?

There are ways to manage the pain including physical therapy, stretching exercises, pain medications, or spinal cord stimulators.
