Ideally, the practice should inform you of the intended compensation package:

a. When you receive the written contract offer.
b. During the initial telephone interview.
c. During your final on-site visit.
d. When you’re presented your first paycheck.

The correct answer is (b). The first interview will likely be by telephone, lasting at least an hour. You should be prepared to ask the interviewer certain questions about the practice opportunity. These questions should be prepared beforehand and limited to those of greatest importance in helping you judge your continued interest. By the time the telephone interview concludes, you should have a clear understanding in regard to:
  • The nature of the practice opportunity, the type of services you would provide, and the characteristics of the patients you would see.
  • The reasons why the practice is seeking a new physician and why they expect the new practice to succeed.
  • The compensation formula and amounts you should expect to earn.
  • The locations you would practice in and call coverage requirements.
  • The expected starting date and the term of employment to be offered.
  • Whether you would be considered for co-ownership in the practice and, if so, the percentage of ownership you would likely be offered.
  • A description of the area and the quality of life it offers you and your family.
  • A timeframe for the practice’s selection process.

These questions should cover the critical areas you’ll need for confirming whether the opportunity is right for you. You may have other questions that are important as well; if so, feel free to add them to the list. Just be sure your list doesn’t become too long. You’ll likely have other opportunities to ask questions later.

Conclude the interview by thanking the interviewer for his/her time, and reiterate your interest in the opportunity, even if you’re not sure you want to pursue it actively. You can always notify the practice later if other opportunities seem better.
