April 11, 2008

(Chicago) – Robert F. Melendez, MD, from Rio Rancho, New Mexico, has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation’s 2008 Leadership Award. This award provides medical students, residents/fellows, early career physicians and established physicians from around the country with special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine and community affairs.

The AMA Foundation honored 56 individuals with the award at its annual Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony on March 31 in Washington DC. Presented in association with the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, recipients of the award are recognized for demonstrating outstanding non-clinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service and education.

Rob Melendez, MD, is a full-time, comprehensive ophthalmologist in private practice and is pursuing an MBA degree at Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque. Dr. Melendez was selected to the "2007 NM Business Weekly 40 under 40 List" of movers and shakers under the age of 40 in New Mexico. He is a co-founder of the Chief Resident Leadership Forum, now in its fifth year. Currently, he is the secretary/treasurer for the New Mexico Academy of Ophthalmology and section chief of ophthalmology for Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Melendez is very involved in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, where he was selected to the Young Ophthalmologist Committee and co-authored a paper entitled “Perceptions of recent ophthalmology residency graduates regarding preparation for practice.” He plays an active role in teaching and mentoring medical students as a volunteer assistant clinical professor at UNM. Dr. Melendez has been married for nearly 16 years and loves playing basketball with his three children.

“Through their committed efforts to advancing health care in their communities, these men and women have shown tremendous potential for joining the next generation of medical leaders,” said Barbara Rockett, MD, president of the AMA Foundation. “Whether the issues are political or social, I am confident that these talented people will provide solid leadership in the interest of improving health care delivery in our country.”
