Annual LASIK Course at the Annual Meeting

One of the most valuable aspects of the Annual American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting is the opportunity to participate in surgical skill labs. For those interested in refractive surgery, the annual Laser Refractive Surgery for Ophthalmology Residents Skills Transfer Course is a fantastic way to obtain hands on refractive surgical experience. This is a perfect opportunity for many residents who have little exposure to refractive surgery during residency to learn the basics of keratorefractive surgery. For those out of training, the academy also offers a similar course geared toward practicing ophthalmologists.

The course begins with an overview presentation of different keratorefractive excimer procedures and then focuses on the basics of LASIK. Following the presentation, participants can rotate between stations and for one-on-one training from some of the biggest names in refractive surgery. Techniques covered include: creating LASIK flaps with both mechanical microkeratomes and femtosecond lasers, lifting, floating, replacing and refloating flaps. Participating in this course is a wonderful way to spend time with and learn from the experts in an environment suited for meaningful discussion. A dedicated didactic portion is taught separately and focuses on advanced topics such as managing complications.
