Thomas Oetting, M.S., M.D.
Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology

Dr. Oetting was raised in Montgomery Alabama where his parents still live. He went to Duke University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship and received a BSE degree in electrical engineering in 1982. He served as an electronics project officer at Hanscom AFB on active duty for 4 years and then in the reserves for 6 more years. Dr. Oetting then attended engineering graduate school on a James B. Duke fellowship at Duke University and received a MS in biomedical engineering in 1987. Dr. Oetting then attended medical school at Duke University on a McGaw scholarship and received his MD degree in 1991. He interned at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center following medical school. He did his ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa becoming board eligible in 1995. He spent 6 months as an associate at the University of Iowa following his residency. He then spent 18 months in private practice in Jefferson City Missouri in a multi specialty medical and surgical group. He returned to the University of Iowa on the ophthalmology faculty in 1997. Dr. Oetting is currently chief of the VA eye service and an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology.
