Dr. Walter Hartel completed his undergraduate training at Wake Forest University where he received a BS in Medical Sciences. He received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and his residency in ophthalmology at the University of South Carolina where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology and orbital disease at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hartel served as Assistant Chief of Ophthalmology at Wright-Patterson AFB Medical Center from 1984 to 1988. He also sub-specializes in oculoplastic surgery.
He currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, at Wright State University in Dayton. He is affiliated with several societies including the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hartel has published many articles in the field of neuro-ophthalmology and is a frequent lecturer.
